Bank robbery in Greerton

UPDATE 3.40PM: Police are searching for a man who robbed the ANZ bank in Greerton, leaving the bank teller traumatised.

Police were called to the bank branch on Cameron Road at around 2.40pm after the robbery.

Police have a number of units outside the bank.

Tauranga Police Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner says the man walked into the bank and passed a note to the teller demanding a sum of money.

No weapon was seen and the man then drove off from the bank with an unknown amount of cash.

Greg says the teller is 'traumatised and shaken” but being looked after by bank staff.

Police are looking for a man matching this description: a male Caucasian in his mid to late 20s, possibly light skinned Maori or Pacific Islander, wearing shorts, t-shirt and blue beanie.

The man was also wearing oversized dark sunglasses and fingerless gloves.

Police would also like to locate the driver of a silver/grey mid size Japanese four door car that may have left the area with the man.

Earlier: Police are searching Greerton for a man believed to be linked to a robbery of the ANZ Bank in the Greerton Shopping Centre.

Police were called to the bank branch on Cameron Road about 2.40pm after reports a man had walked in demanding cash before fleeing the scene.

A reporter at the scene says there is a heavy police presence in the area with three police units and dog handlers out the front of the premises.

A sign on ANZ doors says 'closed due to robbery”.

as if!!!!, way to much of this rubbish happening, as if the pillocks will get away with it, NZ is surrounded by water and a country of 4 million, where do they think they can hide, throw away the "wet bus ticket" its time the court system invested in a few sledge hammers.

I understand (and share) your frustration with what seems to be a steadily increasing stream of crimes against property and people. But history has shown that severe punishment makes little difference (executing people didn't eradicate rape and murder). We need to change the mindset and that starts at an early age in the family and at school. They don't "lick it off the stones"... The best solution to dealing with crime is to prevent it. After it happens the best solution is to rehabilitate, so there is no repeat. Both of these goals are currently proving very hard to attain, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. When community pressure makes crime socially unacceptable, when there is no "glory" in bragging down the pub about the last burglary you did or beating you gave, then we'll see a decline. Change the world one mind at a time...
