Tourists robbed at McLaren Falls

The tourists, who were staying separately in the park, both objected to the man's requests, says detective sergeant Darryl Brazier.

Two foreign campers were assaulted at McLaren Falls Park overnight.

'They certainly didn't make it easy for him,” says Darryl.

A male camper was approached at around 6am and assaulted as the man attempted to steal the van he was sleeping in. He left, returning to teh camp site 30 minutes later.

'He then approached a female tourist who was not connected to the first victim,” adds Darryl.

'He assaulted her and attempted to steal her vehicle, again unsuccessfully.

'He left the scene with some of her property and was located by police about 45 minutes later. Most of the property has been recovered and we are now speaking with him in relation to these two matters.”

A 28-year-old European male is being interviewed by police after being arrested at the park at about 7.30am.

The victims, both foreign tourists in their 20s, were also brought into the police station and will be referred to victim support.

Darryl says: 'Both of these victims are pretty traumatised, and they will get all the support we can give them.”
