$2500 grant for scouts

The Arataki-Omanu Scout Group will be enjoying a touch of luxury during their outdoor experiences this summer thanks to a $2500 donation from Legacy Trust.

The donation will pay for a new canvas tent and cooking implements.

Scout leader Chris McCahill couldn't be happier with the grant.

'Our current tent is mouldy and our camping gear is old and falling apart, so the grant is the financial boost we need to buy new items for our outdoor activities,” he says.

'Our new scouting group of eight boys is a great start for the local community and our numbers are set to grow to 20 scouts next year. I'm sure they'll have lots of fun using the gear.”

The scouts' main focus is on fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and helping others, says Chris.

'Our role as leaders is to support young people to reach their potential and develop their individual skills, including teamwork, leadership and self-motivation,” he adds.

'We introduce the group to lots of outdoor events, especially given our fabulous climate here in the Bay.”

The chance to make a difference was the catalyst to handing the grant to the scouts, says Don Hoult from Legacy Trust.

'Both the scouts and Legacy Trust want to make a positive impact in the community,” says Don.

'The opportunity to support these young people, who are focused on positive change, ticked all the boxes.” Chris says the scouts are all aged 10-years-old, and most of them have graduated from Keas and Cubs.

'We are always looking for new members from any interested young people in the community,” he adds.
