$750K of synthetic drugs seized

Police raids in the Bay of Plenty have seen $750,000 worth of synthetic drugs and more than $150,000 in cash seized.

Search warrants were executed on a number of ‘tinnie houses' in Rotorua yesterday.

Synthetic drug raids in the Bay has seen two men and one woman arrested this week.

Along with the illegal products and money, police also discovered ammunition and a number of imitation firearms and other weapons, which they say is concerning.

Two men and one woman have been charged and will appear in court, and more arrests are likely as the crack-down on psychoactive substances continues.

Rotorua area commander, Inspector Bruce Horne, says police have already received positive feedback from the community about the operation.

He says it's clear from that feedback that people are very concerned about harm being caused by organised crime.

'The harmful consequences of the illicit sale of drugs are wide-reaching,” says Bruce.

'These psychoactive products are not only harming the user, but their families are suffering as a result of both the violent and unpredictable behaviours they cause and the deprivation they suffer as a result of money being spent on drugs instead of food and other essentials.”

On May 7, the government passed the Psychoactive Substances Amendment Act, making it illegal to sell any type of synthetic drugs.

Since then, police have conducted a number of searches as they crack-down on the sale of the once legal high.

Police are asking people in the community to report anything suspicious or if they suspect drug activity in their neighbourhood to contact their local police station.
