Qualifying rounds of Condor Sevens

Bay of Plenty and Taranaki each host qualifiers for the BNZ Condor Sevens this weekend.

The winners of both boys and both girls competitions – along with the BOP boys runner up – qualify for the 28th edition of the National Secondary School Sevens in Auckland on November 29-30.

Twelve boys teams line up at Blake Park, Mt Maunganui, today with Rotorua BHS, Tauranga Boys' College and Otumoetai College expected to challenge for the two BOP spots.

Gisborne BHS, who has already qualified from Poverty Bay, will be in attendance to gain match practice.

Opotiki College, Rotorua GHS and Tauranga Girls' College are the top seeds in the nine-strong girls draw which will similarly feature Lytton HS.

The Taranaki qualifier includes a total of 21 teams playing on Sunday 2 November at Yarrow Stadium.

Five senior boys sides – New Plymouth BHS, Francis Douglas Memorial College, Waitara HS, Opunake HS and Hawera HS – will be competing for the right to represent Taranaki.

There are seven senior girls teams including three from the Wanganui province (Wanganui High School, Wanganui Girls' College and Taihape Area School).

New Plymouth GHS is the favourite to take out the girls' title again this year and hopes are high that they do well at the Condor Sevens following their runners up finish last year.

Seven U15 Boys teams are competing, with FDMC and NPBHS both having entered into the invitational U15 Tournament at the Condor Sevens which is again being held at Kelston BHS.

Canterbury and Wanganui qualifiers will be held next week.
