Men injured in light plane crash

Two people have been seriously injured after a light plane, classed as a microlight, crashed in Pukekohe.

Police and other emergency services were called to the small private airstrip on Runciman Rd, just after 2pm on Saturday.

Police say two people on board the microlight suffered serious injuries and were initially tendered First Aid by friends and fellow flying enthusiasts who were part of a small gathering at the field.

The two occupants of the microlight, aged 61 and 63, were thought to be experienced pilots and the plane was a professionally constructed machine.

Both men were taken to Middlemore Hospital and were thought to be in a serious but stable condition.

Police say it appears the microlight crashed whilst landing, the cause is yet to be determined.

Weather conditions were fine and not thought to have contributed to the crash.

Civil Aviation were advised and will follow-up with the pilot and passenger in due course.

The owner of the microlight was present at the airfield but was not one of the occupants.
