The pair were the first man and woman to complete a 400m sprint to the finish line in the Jetts Dash for Cash down Mount Mainstreet on Friday night.
The night-time sprint is part of the inaugural three-day Mount Festival of Multisport event.
Eighteen-year-old Bay of Plenty Polytechnic student Amy decided to complete the run at Christmas time. She's usually competing the 400m hurdles and long jump, so Friday night's sprint along the main street was 'something different”.
'It [the sprint] is definitely a great idea with the holiday atmosphere. It brings everyone together and it's something cool and different to do.”
Amy also played for the NZ Under-18 team and will this year be focusing on her hurdles and long jump events. She says the $1000 prize will help with travel costs to all her events.
Tauranga Ramblers president Malcolm Taylor says 10 women and 29 men competed in the inaugural sprint.
'The ones who featured were track and field athletes. The two winners were actually 400m hurdlers so that was interesting.”
Malcolm says there were also three girls from the commonwealth games 4x4 relay squad who competed.
Friday's events included the New Zealand Tag Team Championships and Tri Short Course events at Pilot Bay, followed by the Jetts Dash for Cash.
The tag team championships, also holding Oceania Championship status, invited teams of four to each complete a 250m swim, 5km bike, and 2km run before tagging the next team member.
To finish off the multisport event, more than 700 children will take part in the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon at Pilot Bay from 9am.
The King and Queen of Mauao Paddle Board race continues today, with keen paddle-boarders competing in a 10km open ocean paddle on Sunday. The open paddle invites racers to exit Pilot Bay around Mauao, across Main Beach, around Rabbit Island and back to the start.
