Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says applications are now being taken for the Maori Health Development Scheme 2015/16.
Each year the scheme is allocated $8.89 million, which is spread over two programme areas – Maori health and disability provider development and Hauora Maori Scholarships.
Jonathan says: 'This is an important scheme which works to increase the capacity and capability of Maori health and disability providers.”
Maori health and disability providers have used the funding to improve infrastructure, achieve service integration, improve the quality of services and develop workforce skills.
The Hauora Maaori Scholarships assists a minimum of 535 people each year who are studying across a range of fields such as nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, physiotherapy and social work.
In 2014 for the medical category alone, 147 Maori medical students were awarded a scholarship – an increase of 50 percent since 2009.
Jonathan adds: 'The Maori health workforce is a big asset for our health system and it needs our continued support in order to respond to Maori health needs.”
A portion of the 2015/16 funding is already committed in multi-year contracting agreements signed in 2013/14.
Applications for the scheme close March 13, at 12pm.

Many Maori young and old today are barely getting enough funding to feed and a keep roof over heads and certainly not enough to maintain health properly to live as long as the pale crew. With fewer than 4% reaching pension age of 65. This is why today few elders found on Marae all around country. This is direct proof of multi-generational GENOCIDE POLICY in force here. UN special Rapatour needs to investigate. Maori also usually the last to get hospital treatment etc while pale crew get first option. The usually foreign staff always ensure Maori as with job market are last on first off or dead and buried well before natural time.Even these meagre funds will be chewed up in government compliance rules which are far hasher for Maori health providers than those for pale crew. WHY so, are South Africans and Poms preferred over Maori or something?

I have about 1/16th of Maori blood in me and I would qualify for this. Also when I was last at my Doctors she said I qualify for all this FREE stuff as i "am Maori", first I had been told about this. Anyway, I think it is disgusting, why are these things only on offer to Maori are we not all New Zealanders? That is so racist, I do not understand this so I would love an explanation to this.

you haven't yet worked it out. Forget your prejudice, think laterally and you will find the whole system is geared to your cultural needs. The only double standard is your attitude. You have absolutely no right to deny Maori their birth rights, none at all. Robin Bell.
Totally agree

Just another reminder about the racist country we live in. Why must there be specific things for Maori wouldn't it be great if we could all be treated equal as one nation, but I guess that's only for the developed world. In todays economy its not only Maori that's struggling.

I am unable to apply for this scheme because of the colour of my skin. Therefore I am discriminated against on racist policy by the governement of this country, even though I was born here. Yes, NZ is a racist country with maori having all the privileges.

First of all who are the 'pale crew' that you refer to? Secondly, all of your rantings are factually incorrect and thirdly, your inflammatory comments will do nothing for the harmony of this country!
