Bay immunisation rate too low

The Bay of Plenty has one of the lowest rates of child immunisation in New Zealand, according to Toi Te Ora Public Health Service's Dr Jim Miller, who says it is important for children to get immunised from six weeks of age.

'Immunisation is the best way of protecting your child from very serious illnesses such as whooping cough, hepatitis and polio,” says Jim.

'Kids in the Bay of Plenty area are being put at unnecessary risk when immunisation is delayed.”

Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service is embarking on a public awareness campaign in order to help parents to realise how critical immunisation is for their child's health.

'Because of the low level of immunisation in the Bay of Plenty, our community immunity is reduced as well.

'Those of us who remember or have read about the devastating effects of polio and diphtheria would never want to see a return of these diseases, so it's really important we keep informing parents about having their babies immunised as recommended.”

Maybe it is becasue we have the MOST educated parents in the country and that is why we choose NOTto immunize our kids. Have you researched the devasting effects immunizations have on our kids?? being informed means looking at ALL the facts, not just the one side the govt wishes us to see.

Informed consent is the legal standard. Our family have (wisely) chosen not to immunise. If immunisation were effective, those children who are immunised will not be at risk, will they...

As someone who has lived through seen the affects of Polio diphtheria and most of the other diseases your children are immunized against you are taking a huge gambol with your children`s health so lets hope you don't regret your decision.Just remember in this day and age teenagers travel to lots of dodgy countries where many of the diseases we immunize against are common.Just remember you are gambling with your Kids health and you live with the consequences good luck.

Ignorance is not bliss

The post 'educated' is clearly mislabelled - as is 'also educated'. Otherwise one would contain the correct spelling of 'devastating' and the other might indicate some glimmer of understanding of how immunisation works. Sadly, the only things likely to be devastated are the health of mel27's and ceejay9's children (if they have children), and the health of the children of others due to their ignorance. But, sadly, their arrogance far exceeds their ignorance and their (tiny) minds are made up. Be that as it may, it would serve them, their children and their community much better if, rather than spouting ill-informed rubbish in public, they learnt to use a dictionary and undertook some real research - starting with the concept of 'herd immunity'. But I doubt their children and their community will be so lucky!
