Oropi crash victim named

Tauranga teenager Levi Green has been named as the 18-year-old killed following a crash in Oropi last night.

Levi was the sole occupant of a car that went over a bank on Mountain Road about 11pm.

Police say he had been thrown from the vehicle and died on his way to hospital.

The serious crash unit is investigating the crash but police say Levi was driving a white Nissan Cefiro which crashed after failing to stop for police.

Police had been called to an out of control party and came up behind the Cefiro with no tail lights on.

'The police patrol signalled to the vehicle to pull over. Instead the vehicle accelerated away and within seconds disappeared over a bank, while one of the officers was still on the radio reporting that the vehicle had failed to stop.”

Witnesses who have not already spoken to police can report any information about the incident to Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Such a tragedy, a waste of a young life who failed to stop for police. Too many people dying on BOP roads, when will it stop

Unfortunately until such time as the penalty for NOT STOPPING is a lot greater than the penalty for stopping, we will continue to see people taking the risk of fleeing in the hope that Police will call off the chase. From time to time we will see some people paying the ultimate price.
