Isolated heavy showers are possible about Coromandel Peninsula and Western Bay of Plenty later this morning and afternoon, but MetService says thunderstorms are not expected.

The New Zealand Transport Agency issued a warning on Saturday afternoon after flooding on State Highway 2 from Waihi to Tauranga.

Excess water at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Wright Rd caused a road hazard and motorists were urged to drive with caution.

A few parts of Coromandel Peninsula and WBOP north and west of Tauranga experienced downpours of 25-40mm/hr overnight, with MetService issuing a severe thunderstorm watch for the areas.

Whitianga residents took to Facebook, posting pictures of severe flooding at Whiti Farm Park in Whitianga. SunLive has been unable to contact the farm park. The phone line keeps dropping out.
