Arrests in French tourist robbery

Police have arrested two men and charged them with aggravated robbery following the robbery of two French tourists in the Papamoa area on Saturday, July 7.

The men were hitching south out of Mount Maunganui near Te Maunga about 4pm when they were picked up by a vehicle with two male occupants.

The two tourists were robbed behind the old service station on SH2.

They were driven to the rear of the abandoned Shell service station on State Highway 2 near Welcome bay Road, Papamoa where they were assaulted.

Their packs, clothing, passports, all of their cash and money cards were stolen leaving the two French men without the means to support themselves.

A 26-year-old Ngaruawahia man and a 24-year-old Mount Maunganui man will appear in the Tauranga District Court on Wednesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner says the two men were interviewed following a series of search warrants in the Tauranga/Mount Maunganui area this morning.

Police say they will not be making any further comment on the matter as the case is now before the courts.

Thank goodness they have the thugs who did this. Fingers crossed they get all of whats coming to them in the court room. Must be great news for the French tourists, knowing now their attackers are in hand and have to cop whats due..

Looking forward to the mugshot!

I thought it was an absolute crack-up that the offenders were described as having "extremely low intelligence". Oh the humiliation of having to face that charge in court!
