Firefighters were called to the blaze at Rogers Rd just after 4pm on Sunday.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says about five square metres of scrub was on fire, which was initially reported as an unattended fire.

'It was a pretty small area of scrub on fire and was extinguished pretty quickly.”

A nearby resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says three fire trucks attended, including Maketu Fire Brigade, who were first on scene.

He reported the fire to be 'out of control” at one stage.

'Flames at one stage leapt six metres and smoke was billowing across SH2.”
