A total of 681 homes are without power in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel area.

Power cuts are currently affecting 318 homes in Te Puke, 255 properties in Whakamarama and 108 houses in Whitianga.

Homes in Papamoa are also reported to be affected by the outages.

The outages happened earlier this morning and contractors are working to restore the supply.

According to Powerco, power is not expected to be back on in the Western Bay until around 1.30pm.

Those affected in the Whitianga area can expect to have power back on around 11.30am.

The cause of the outage is under investigation.
