State Highway 29A from Maungatapu to Baypark is open to traffic again following a serious crash earlier this morning.

The NZTA advises the 'earlier incident has cleared and traffic is returning to normal', however motorists may experience delays.

An accident near the highway on ramp at the end of Maungatapu Road at around 10.40am prompted police to close the busy highway for around two hours.

One person was seriously injured in the crash and taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A police spokesperson says police believe a medical event may have been a contributing factor to the crash.

I drive past that area everyday during the week as I work in Papamoa. Its unbelievable how many close calls I have personally witnessed as people merge into highway traffic. Sometimes I think they expect the highway traffic to automatically give way to them. And sometimes I think they don't even bother to look.Maybe its time to block off the exit permanently.Just saying?
