A fatal crash in Kawerau in the early hours of the morning has left one man dead.

Police observed a vehicle travelling at high speeds on River Rd around 3.30am this morning.

The vechicle was then seen at around 3.37am with its lights turned off.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, however the driver accelerated and failed to stop. A pursuit ensued and the vehicle lost control and crashed into a tree.

The sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.

Police say they are currently working to identify the man's next of kin.

A number of investigations will now commence – a Serious Crash Unit investigation and an internal police investigation, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
