They play a clean game while they're on the court, but when they're off it, players from New Zealand's Silver Ferns aren't afraid to get their hands a little dirty.

Players are rolling up their sleeves this weekend, ahead of their anticipated match against South Africa's Proteas, to lend a hand where it counts at Waipuna Hospice Charity Shop in Mount Maunganui.

They're encouraging more people to come on board and volunteer at Hospice Shops throughout Tauranga, so from 4pm-5pm this Sunday, players will be in store doing a push to get more volunteers.

The drive is in association with Hospice New Zealand and House of Travel who have been national partners for more than 10 years.

'This an association we are extremely proud of, and which continues to go from strength to strength,” says a spokesperson for House of Travel.

'Over the past decade, House of Travel stores throughout the country have supported their local hospices in ways as diverse as their communities; raising both funds and awareness and helping to educate the public about the invaluable services hospice provides.

'The partnership provides unique character and team-building opportunities for House of Travel teams, with many stores volunteering their time within the community and connecting with locals.”

The day will be an opportunity to not only meet Silver Fern's players, but to learn more about the ways people can volunteer.

All proceeds made from Hospice charity stores are are used to provide palliative care services for people within the Western Bay of Plenty region.

The stores would not be operational without the hours put in by a number of generous volunteers who work in each of the stores.

Those interested in learning more about how to become a volunteer can head along to the event at Waipuna Hospice Charity Shop from 4pm-5pm this Sunday.
