Tauranga residents who witnessed a police pursuit near Hairini last night, say police officers came under attack.

Several police units were seen chasing an alleged offender on Waimapu Pa Road, just before 10pm.

A witness to the incident says he heard several police cars "chasing a perpetrator, the perpetrator ran onto a marae and it seems police came under attack".

"Then a hoard of police vehicles flew up in for backup."

Another person who witnessed the chase says he counted around 15 police units involved.
