Matamata murder accused appears in court

A man charged with the murder of a woman at a Matamata house on Christmas Eve has appeared in court.

Paraki Edwards, 40, of Matamata, appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Wednesday before community magistrate Ngaire Mascelle, who remanded him in custody and without plea to next appear in the High Court in Hamilton on February 5.

Paraki, who was represented in court by duty solicitor Maria Young, faces a single charge of murdering Michelle Hurinui.

Emergency services were called to the house, on State Highway 27, at 1pm on Monday.

The woman's baby was also injured during the incident and remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.
