It's all about fun, family and fireworks down at the Waterfront tonight.

Residents and visitors are in full celebration and the Strand and Waterfront is buzzing with entertainment and activities.

"It's fantastic," says Tauranga City councillor Max Manson. "It just shows Tauranga's got what it takes to become a family-centred city and that's what the council has done this year."

The family-friendly entertainment includes a Mayor's barbecue with free sausages, roving performers from pirates and circus performers, live music from the Superhero band, a great variety of food, and even a visit from Batman in his Batmobile. Finished off with fireworks at 9.30pm.

Mayor Greg Brownless who is handing out free sausages says they expect to cook about 800 sausages over the night. Last year they cooked around 500 and ran out.

"I think we've got it about right this year," says Greg. "It's just a family New Year's here, and I think we've reclaimed New Year's for family and that's what it's all about."

He says after he finishes up, he will check out the two other council events in Tauranga.
