A stalwart of Greerton and the Bay's rugby is to be honoured today at the Tauranga Domain.

There will be a moment's silence before Ngawha kick off their game today against Taranaki, to honour Ron Pearson, who sadly died this week.

Bay of Plenty Rugby report that this week, Greerton Marist Rugby Club lost a stalwart of the game.

'It's with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ron Pearson,” says a Greerton Marist Recreation & Community spokesperson. 'Ron was a huge part of the Greerton Marist Rugby Club and a huge supporter in every capacity. He prided himself on the preparation and presentation of their four rugby fields each week and was a passionate rugby supporter turning up to every training to give his words of advice.

'He worked tirelessly behind the scenes videoing and editing countless hours of match footage to assist both players and referees alike with improving their performances.

'Ron also made time to support our girls at their netball games and has managed to capture many of their winning moments in film. He was also committed to our Junior Rugby program making time to attend many trainings, games and prize givings and capturing their love for rugby and our Greerton Marist colours.”

Ron was recently the recipient of the Meredith Cup for Volunteer of the year at the club's Senior Prize Giving.

'The Club is appreciative of everything Ron has contributed and this has been shown by our nomination of Ron for the BOPRU Service to Sport Award in the upcoming annual BOPRU awards evening.

'On top of this all he was a genuine nice guy who'd do anything for anyone.

'This is a very sad day for our Gtown family and Ron will be sorely missed.”

The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union also report that recently, Ron volunteered as the match day video recorder for the Bay of Plenty Ngawha for their home games during their Northern Region Development campaign.

Heartfelt condolences will be expressed to the Pearson family by the players and spectators taking a moment's silence before the Ngawha kick off their game today.

A celebration of Ron's life was held at Greerton Marist Rugby Club on Friday.
