Severe flooding in Mount Maunganui

The Mall, in Mount Maunganui, is currently closed to motorists following severe flooding in the area.

A SunLive photographer at the scene says the water is sweeping into people's backyards.

'It is extremely bad near the Westhaven Motel.

'One person's car is nearly flooded completely. The water has passed the tyres.

'The road is down to one lane, and it looks like the road is damaged.”

He says it seems to be the cause of a water main bursting.

'The road is lifting up and a sinkhole is forming.”

He says in some parts the water is around 60cm in depth.

'It's higher than the curb.”

Police and Council are currently in attendance. Traffic management is in place.

Meters away from the harbour and properties are at risk from flooding. What happens in a heavy rain event?
