UPDATED 9:35pm One lane is now open on State Highway 2 near Aongatete following serious a crash.

One lane is open and traffic control is in place, motorists are asked to please have patience, a police spokesperson says.

Earlier: People have sustained serious injuries following a crash on State Highway 2 near Aongatete.

The two-car crash on SH2, about halfway between Katikati and Aongatete, occurred around 8:30pm, a police spokesperson says.

'Indications are at this stage there are serious injuries, and the Serious Crash Unit has been advised.”

The road is blocked and police will advise of diversions when they have more information.
