LIVE updates: Police ready to arrest non-compliant

Police Commissioner Mike Bush.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush says police have spotted people out on the streets not complying with the COVID-19 restrictions overnight.

The country moved to alert level 4 at 11.59pm last night to try and combat the COVID-19 coronavirus, and everyone must stay at home apart from essential workers.

Police were given more powers yesterday to be able to order any person to stop any activity that contributes to the spread of COVID-19.

  • If you have symptoms of the coronavirus, call the NZ Covid-19 Healthline on 0800 358 5453 (+64 9 358 5453 for international SIMs)

Mike Bush told Morning Report the people police spotted out on the streets were unaware of the rules.

"Those who don't comply, there'll be consequences, it's as simple as that," he says.

But he says police will only prosecute people committing serious breaches.

Confused

LOCKDOWN has been instigated. According to Jacinda and newspaper reports I can go for a walk, go get exercise, go to the supermarket, go for a drive. The Police are saying if we do go out they're going to hunt us down and deal with us. My exercise is normally surfing - I'm by myself, more than 2mtr apart. Am I breaking the law? There's conflicting reports between the rules from Government and the rules from Police. The rules are not clear. STAY HOME BUT GOOUT TO EXERCISE, STAY HOME BUT GO TO THE SUPERMARKET . . . STAY HOME BUT GO FOR A DRIVE, STAY HOME OR THE POLICE WILL HUNT YOU DOWN . . .
