BOP town in lockdown after firearms incident

UPDATE: People are being asked to avoid the Kawerau township in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

A police spokesperson says police are responding to a firearms incident in the area.

"We ask people to avoid travelling around the town area at this time."

Radio 1XX is reporting a heavy police presence in Kawerau following what is reported to be a police pursuit.

The pursuit stretched from as far as Awakeri through to Onepu and Kawerau, has seen cordons placed on each end of the town, including at Liverpool Street, River Road and Tamarangi Drive, 1XX is reporting on its Facebook page.

Reports are coming in of armed police cordons in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

Radio 1XX is reporting a heavy police presence in Kawerau following what is reported to be a police pursuit.

Listeners in both Onepu and the Kawerau township have reported a black vehicle being pursued by police, 1XX reports on its Facebook page.

There are also reports on social media that shot have been fired during the pursuit. This is yet to be confirmed by police.
