A man is facing possible charges following an incident in the Bay of Plenty which left a member of police unconscious.

Two police staff were taken to hospital following an incident at the Rotorua Police Station custody hub.

They were injured about 11.40am on Thursday after a man in custody became aggressive while being escorted to the toilet, says Bay of Plenty District Commander, Superintendent Andy McGregor.

'One of the police staff was knocked unconscious.

'In an attempt to restrain the man, police staff deployed OC spray which was ineffective. They then utilised a taser and were eventually able to restrain the man.

'This proved to be an extremely volatile situation for our staff, and we are incredibly fortunate their injuries were not more significant.”

McGregor says the two police staff are still being assessed in hospital around 7pm on Thursday, but were expected to be discharged later thatnight.

Charges in relation to the incident are under consideration.
