Updated: A person is in a critical condition and State Highway 2 in Pongakawa is closed following a crash.
The two-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of SH2 and Arawa Road about 4.20pm says a police spokesperson.
A St John spokesperson says one patient in a critical condition was transported to Tauranga Hospital in a helicopter.
Two others in a moderate condition and one with minor injuries were transported to hospital in ambulances.
The Serious Crash Unit has been notified and traffic management is in place, says the police spokesperson.
Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency is advising SH2 just north of Pongakawa School Road is now closed.
Allow extra time for detour via SH33, says a statement from NZTA.
The detour is as follows:
Northbound: Left onto Pongakawa School Roadd, right onto Old Coach Rd, right onto SH33 to return to SH2 north.
Southbound can use either: SH33 from Paengaroa roundabout, left to Old Coach Rd, left to Pongakawa School Rd to return to SH2 south.
Or remain on SH2, right onto Maniatutu Rd, left onto Old Coach Rd left to Pongakawa School Rd to return to SH2 south

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says two fire trucks an emergency response vehicle, police and ambulance all went flying past her.
NZTA says to expect delays.
