Update, 8.16pm:

State Highway 5 remains closed between Wairakei and Tihiotonga following a serious crash. A detour is in place.

NZTA advises motorists to follow the detour and allow at least an extra 30 minutes travel time.

Update, 7.56pm:

Police are at the scene of a serious two car crash on State Highway 5, Waiotapu.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash between Waikite Valley Road and Waikaremoana Road at around 7:15pm.

Three helicopters have been dispatched.

The Serious Crash Unit are also on their way to the scene.

An update on injuries and number of people involved will be provided when able, says a Police spokesperson.

SH5 is closed and diversions are being put in place.

Earlier:

Police are responding to a serious crash on SH5, near Rotorua.

The crash is believed to be involving two cars.
