UPDATE 9.26PM: One person is reported to be in serious condition following a crash on State Highway 2, north of Katikati,

Police were alerted to a two vehicle crash, between Tuapiro Road and Hikurangi Road, shortly after 8.30pm, says a police spokesperson.

"One person is reported to be seriously injured.

"The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

"The road is closed in both directions and motorists are advised to avoid the area, as there will be severe delays."

EARLIER:

Reports are coming in of a serious crash on State Highway 2.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says there is a serious crash on the highway north of Katikati.

"Emergency services are at the scene and the road is blocked."

SH2 is closed between Hikurangi Road and Taupiro Road.

People are advised to avoid the scene or expect delays in the area.

Diversions are being put in place.
