Man dies after Arataki Beach water incident

UPDATE 5:38pm: Police have now confirmed one person has died following a water incident in Mount Maunganui.

In a statement, police state that a man, believed to be in his 50s, died in the incident, which occurred on Arataki Beach, near Waiariki St.

Police state the man was among a group of swimmers who got into trouble and despite the best efforts of paramedics and surf lifesavers he passed away at the scene.

'The man was among a group of four swimmers who got into difficulty,” says a police statement.

'All were brought to shore by members of the public and surf lifesavers.

'One man was unconscious and was unfortunately unable to be revived, despite the efforts of St John Ambulance paramedics and surf lifesavers.”

The other members of the group are accounted for and believed to be uninjured.

'Police are making enquiries in relation to the death on behalf of the coroner,” concludes the police statement.

PREVIOUSLY 5.30pm: St John have confirmed they have attended a water incident in Mount Maunganui.

However, they did not give any details of patient status at this time.

'St John received a call to a water incident near Mount Maunganui at 4.39pm today,” says a St John spokesperson.

One rapid response vehicle, two ambulances and one helicopter responded to the incident, said to be on Arataki Beach near Waiariki St.

This is the second major incident along the same coastline this week. One person was left in a critical condition after a water rescue at Omanu Beach on Wednesday.

EARLIER: Emergency services are at the scene of a water rescue in Mount Maunganui.

A witness says CPR was in progress after a person was pulled from the water on Arataki Beach near Waiariki St.

'The lifeguards were working on someone and there was a bit of a crowd,” says the witness.

Another eyewitness says they had to pull over along Oceanbeach Rd as police went by.

A rescue helicopter has been seen in the area.

are happening in our waters, think its safer to stay home have a cold bath or shower!!!!!!!!!
