Update, 3pm: Waioeka Road is down to one lane following an earlier serious crash involving a truck and trailer.

The driver, who was the single-occupant, has been airlifted to hospital in Gisborne in a serious condition.

"It is expected the truck and trailer will be removed from the Waioeka River later today which will likely involve a further road closure," says a Police spokesperson.

Motorists are asked to continue to avoid the area.

Update, 1pm:

A truck and trailer unit has rolled into the Waioeka River in the Waioeka Gorge.

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on Waioeka Road in the gorge.

The crash was reported to Police just before 12pm.

"Indications are there are injuries,' says a Police spokesperson.

The Waioeka Gorge is expected to be closed and motorists are asked to delay travel.

Earlier, 12.30pm:

A truck has crashed in the Waioeka Gorge.

Police received a report of an incident involving a truck on Waioeka Road shortly after 11am.

Police, Fire and Ambulance services are currently responding.

It is unknown at this stage whether there are any injuries or road closures.
