Stars return for squash championships in Tauranga

Two world champions are set to headline the Oliver Sport New Zealand Squash Championships in Tauranga later this week.

World No 2 and British Open champion Paul Coll and women's No 5 and Commonwealth champion Joelle King will play the tournament at the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre, after returning home for the first time in three years.

Play starts from midday Friday, with matches continuing on Saturday and the finals starting from 1pm on Sunday.

The majority of New Zealand's top players are taking part with full 32-player draw featuring Coll and King.

King is aiming for her ninth New Zealand title, while Coll will be looking for his sixth.

Other seeded players in the men's draw include Commonwealth Games players, Lwamba Chileshe at No 2 and ranked 90th in the world while Temwa Chileshe ranked 115th is the third seed, says a spokesperson for the tournament.

"Current New Zealand title holder Evan Williams is fourth seed and should meet Coll in the semifinals if the draw goes to plan.

"However, seeds five through eight; Willz Donnelley (Taupo), Chris Van Der Salm (Whanganui), Elijah Thomas (Auckland) and Anthony Lepper (Auckland) will be trying to upset the higher ranked players where they can."

The women's draw features King at No 1 with Manawatu's Kaitlyn Watts who has been competing overseas ranked 93 at No 2. Watts, 21 was also named in the team to Birmingham.

Commonwealth Games doubles gold medal winner Amanda Landers-Murphy (Rotorua) is third seed with Auckland's Lana Harrison fourth followed by Commonwealth Games team member Abbie Palmer fifth and junior Ella Lash (Auckland) sixth.

The tournament will be live-streamed on Squash New Zealand's facebook on the Friday and Saturday with Duke TV hosting the finals live on the Sunday.
