UPDATE 6.42AM: State Highway 29 is reported to now be open.

The highway was closed earlier this morning following a serious crash just after midnight.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reports the highway was blocked in both directions between SH28 and Hanga Road.

In a traffic system update this morning, the roading agency says the road is now open.

EARLIER:

State Highway 29 is closed over the Kaimai Range due to a serious crash.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transpoirt Agency reports the road,  between Hanga Road and SH28, is closed following a crash just after midnight.

People are being asked to avoid the area or allow significant time for a detour.
