UPDATE 12.43PM: State Highway 29 is closed.

NZ Transport Agency reports the road is closed in both directions due to a serious crash near the Kaimai Summit.

"Due to a serious crash west of SH29 Kaimai summit, the road is closed.

"Expect delays and use alternative route."

Alternative routes proposed include: SH36, SH5, SH28.

A SunLive reader says a car and truck have crashed on the Matamata side of the summit.

People are advised to avoid the area.

A police spokesperson says the road is likely to be closed for sometime.
