XRACE is celebrating 10 years with a fun-filled family challenge at Mount Maunganui this weekend.

XRACE is a mystery adventure race where adults and children age six to 14 race together, locate and complete 10 mystery challenges, racing the clock and all the other family teams.

“With everything from dance sequences to double sack races, knowledge and memory games!” says senior marketing communications specialist Janelle Ericksen.

“No XRACE is ever the same.”

Janelle is encouraging everyone to let this be an opportunity to have some fun with some family members.

“An XRACE team is usually made up of two people – an adult and a child aged between six and 14,” says Janelle.

“However, you can register as a team of one adult and two children, or as a two-child team for kids 10 to 14.”

She says for the under-six-year-olds, there's a Nippers mini race.

“Terms and conditions may differ, so it's best to read the details on the Buy Tickets page before registering.”

Janelle says NZ Home Loans local teams will be there to support the XRACE crew and connect with their community - running barbecues fundraising for charity, prize draws, and the Spirit of XRACE sportsmanship award.

“XRACE is more than a race,” says Janelle.

“The event series encourages connection and problem-solving within families to create lasting memories and boost the confidence of Kiwi kids.

“The goal is to strengthen and challenge families to empower and build more resilient kids and encourage competition and sportsmanship.”

Janelle says that mostly, people should enter XRACE as an opportunity to have a great time together.

“All activities are ready for you - all you have to do is show up and enjoy!”

She says the challenges consist of mystery challenges - you receive the challenge at the time - and compulsory challenges where the challenge is received in advance.

“XRACE is suitable for a range of fitness levels,” says Janelle.

“The Tauranga racetrack is approximately 3km - there is no need to run between challenges.

“While some teams thrive on competitiveness, many are simply there to enjoy the experience as a family - there's no right or wrong way it's your XRACE.”

Each team member will receive an XRACE tee-shirt and medal on completion.

“As some challenges may involve water, mud, and physical exertion, we recommend dressing appropriately in sports or old clothes and closed-in shoes.”

Races are timed with a transponder provided by XRACE.

“At NZHL, we’re incredibly proud of the positive impact of XRACE on local families,” says Janelle.

“As we mark our 10th anniversary as title sponsors, NZHL remains committed to supporting XRACE and delivering its event programme to your local community with another three years of sponsorship.

“The current economic environment has strained our communities, businesses, and the events industry, but we are confident 2024 will be bigger and better with additional locations -Taupō, Queenstown, and Dunedin.”

From February to April, there are 16 XRACE events but Janelle says no XRACE is ever the same.

“XRACE aligns with who we are - passionately Kiwi, national, and regional, to facilitate better outcomes for New Zealanders.”
