Fatal crash on SH5, Rotorua to Taupo

Update, 7.20am:  One person has died following a crash on State Highway 5, Whakarewarewa, south of Rotorua this morning.

The crash, involving two vehicles, was reported to Police at 5.05am.

A second person sustained serious injuries.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time and motorists are asked to take alternative routes.

Earlier, 6.30am:  Emergency services are attending the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 5 between Rotorua and Taupo.

"Due to a serious crash, the road is closed," says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"Please follow detour or directions of emergency services."

The crash is located about 1.5km southwast of Whakarewarewa. It is unknown at this stage how many people are injured.

For an alternative route:

Light vehicle detour. Intersection of SH5 and Waikite Valley Rd, Corbett Rd, Rehi Rd, Waikauakau Rd, SH30. SH30, Waikaukau Rd, Rehi Rd, Corbett Rd, Waikite Valley Rd and SH5 intersection. This detour route is not suitable for HMPV's.

HMPV's detour via SH38 and SH5 southbound, SH1, SH30. SH30, SH1 SH5 northbound to SH38.

State Highway 5 will remain closed until further notice.
