One person is dead following a crash on State Highway 2, near Pukehina.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash just before 2pm on Monday.

The driver of the other vehicle is in hospital with serious injuries, says a police spokesperson.

"The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination."

The road was reopened early this morning.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."

A witness at the scene says a car and truck appeared to be involved.

He says the car is "crushed" and there is a trail of debris on the road.

The overturned truck was on the railway side.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact their nearest police station.
