NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is urging drivers travelling on State Highway 5 Napier-Taupō Road to be extra cautious on Tuesday with heavy snow warnings in the area.

Metservice is forecasting snow to fall on SH5 above 700 metres.

"Currently the warning is in place between 2pm and 9pm on Tuesday, September 17," says an NZTA spokesperson.

"Roading contractors will be on the road to ensure they’re able to respond quickly to any potential issues."

Meanwhile, a heavy snow watch is in force for the Taihape area from 10am til 6pm tomorrow. 

"NZTA is reminding all road users to avoid travel if you can, take extreme care on the road and drive to conditions.

"Please also expect short-notice closures should conditions worsen and keep an eye on the NZTA Facebook pages and Journey Planner for any changes."

Driving in the ice and snow:

• Drive slower than you normally would – it only takes a split second to lose control in wet or icy conditions.
• Avoid sudden braking or turning movements that could cause you to skid. 
• Accelerate smoothly and brake gently.
• Use your highest gear when travelling uphill and your lowest downhill.
• For vehicles without anti-skid braking systems, to avoid skidding or sliding pump the brake pedal in short rapid bursts rather than pressing long and hard.
• Drive at a safe travelling distance because it takes longer to stop on slippery roads. In winter, especially in poor weather, double the two-second rule and leave a safe distance between you and the car you’re following.
• When travelling in fog, rain or snow, drive with your lights dipped for increased safety.
