Pennant finals tee off

Although only separated by Maunganui Rd and few hundred metres as the golf ball flies, Omanu and Mount Maunganui will be coming from different neighbourhoods in a battle to win the Black Championship Pennant finals on today.

The finals are being played at Omanu Golf Club from 8am today.

Omanu have been the form team all season and have the advantage of playing at home. But this can also put pressure on the home team. After scraping into the final by half a point, the Mount have nothing to lose and will enjoy the underdog status.

It's hard to pick where the points will come from when the players are matched up individually, which suggests the outcome of the morning foursomes will have a serious bearing on the final result.

At the top of the order, Bailey Smith will take on arguably Omanu's most consistent golfer in recent years, Mark Kiwi.

The talented Smith has had a poor Pennant season by his own standards. But in his final match for his club before taking up a golf scholarship in the United States, he will be determined to deliver the goods.

Hayden White and Jordan Golding provide real strength in Omanu's middle order and the hugely talented 15-year-old Shaun Campbell knows how to go low on his home track. The match ups at five and six are too tough to call.

In the Women's Championship there is a classic battle looming between the precocious talent of three Tauranga youngsters Emmalee Morrell, Jodae Ngaheu and Madison Gartner up against a team of more mature Omanu ladies.

Recently arrived from North Harbour, Jackie Gray adds experience to the Tauranga team and with Alanna Campbell away on New Zealand Golf commitments, this may be just enough to get Tauranga over the line. The battle in the senior grade is also hard to call as the two combatants have played in different regional competitions.

Opotiki thumped all their opposition during the regular season and then comfortably put away Tauranga in the semi-finals, which suggests Omanu will have to work very hard to secure that title.

The Intermediate final will also be an enthralling match. Both Tauranga and Omanu are very well managed and organised, which sees them perennially featuring at the business end of the season.

Again the outcome of the morning foursomes is sure to have a major bearing on the outcome and home advantage may just give Omanu reason to celebrate tonight.

To get to the junior final takes some doing and for the first time there are two Eastern Bay sides competing.

Kawerau and Ohope will know each others weaknesses and strengths, but the Ohope number two player Wetini Mokomoko may be forgiven if he loses focus to follow the fortunes of his granddaughter, who is playing for Tauranga ladies.
