Te Puke eye perfect five

A perfect four weeks of rugby has Te Puke Sports sitting comfortable near the top of the Bayfair Baywide table. But they come up against their stiffest challenge to date in Whakarewarewa.

Heading into week five of the premier competition just two sides are unbeaten – Te Puke and Tauranga Sports.

This weekend will see the Bayfair Baywide Premier, Premier Development and Division One teams play, while the Bayfair Baywide Women's rugby takes a well-deserved weekend off.

After a 40-10 loss to Tauranga Sports, Whakarewarewa head home to host Te Puke in what should be another tight tussle between two top four sides.

Last week's loss was the Rotorua side's first of the season with discipline proving costly against an impressive Tauranga Sports side.

They will want to produce a strong performance as they did last year, and capitalise on their home game advantage.

Te Puke Sports coach Craig Jeffries says heading to Whaka is never an easy task, especially as their opponents will be hurting and will want to get back on track.

'We are very aware of the hiding they gave us over there last year, and no doubt they will be trying to replicate that.”

Other matches see Paroa host Greerton Marist at Lawson Park, Rotoiti at home to Opotiki, Te Puna and defending champions Mount Maunganui clashing, Tauranga Sports away to Waikite, and Whakatane Marist at home to Rangataua.

Division One has the match of the round as Kahukura taking on Arataki.

Both teams have been performing well in the Bayfair Baywide Division One competition, where Kahukura remain unbeaten, and Arataki with just the one loss.

Kahukura coach Ron Preston says they are looking forward to this clash, given they haven't played any 'top seeds”.

Arataki are certainly up there. It will be interesting to see how we measure up against them.

'We are all 100 per cent fit, but we will be missing forwards this weekend due to work commitments. We have a lot of depth in our forward pack so it shouldn't affect us. We play an expansive game and we will be looking to put that into practice again this weekend”.

Arataki coach Marty Bourke is aware this will be a good challenge given Kahukura are competition leaders and averaging about 34 points a game.

'So it will be a good indicator if we are deserving of a spot in the top four or not.”

He adds the side has been going well but injuries and player availability are a concern.

'We have put together some really good patches of play together but have also let ourselves down in some key moments; gaining some consistency will hopefully be on the cards.

'We had a rough week last weekend with our life member Sid Longley losing his wife after a battle with cancer but that seems to have brought the group closer together and putting why we play the game into perspective.

'Our focus for the weekend will be to test ourselves against the competition leaders who have made no secret of their desire to win that promotion spot. Regardless of the result we need to play our style of rugby, and the key to winning away from home will be in our preparation”.

The other Division One matches have Galatea and Poroporo clashing at the Galatea Domain, Katikati at home to Reporoa, Rangiuru versus Ngongotaha, Judea away to Ruatoki, and Te Teko hosting Marist St Michael's.
