Club contenders to step up

With daylight currently sitting between Tauranga Sports and Te Puke Sports, and then the rest of the chasing Bayfair Baywide teams, things are beginning to heat up on the club rugby scene.

Round Six of the baywide competition kicks off tomorrow featuring a number of clashes between playoff contenders and a re-match of the 2014 grand final.

For last year's finalists Mount Maunganui and Whakarewarewa it marks a chance to push back into the top four, with three wins a piece.

In 2014, the Mount came from fourth ranked finalist to lift their first premier title since 2005 with a tense 26-23 victory.

While seventh placed Greerton Marist will be looking to grab some vital competition points when it hosts fourth placed Rangataua.

Both sides are fresh off sizeable wins last week, Greerton putting 60 points on Waikite and Rangataua 43-0 against Paroa, their third win in a row.

Greerton Marist coach Kevin Lee is hoping for a bit of luck like they did when the teams clashed during the preseason.

'Things are starting to shape up a little; a couple of wins now and everyone is starting to smile. But we know Rangataua are going to be hard. They are now sitting in the top four.

'As for us we have to focus game by game now”.

Rangataua coach Murray Ririnui admits the side didn't perform too well in the first round, but are now getting their act together.

'We will respect Greerton, they are a great team and will be treated with the greatest of respect.

'We will need to finish off our planned plays, do our basics right and continue to play our game.”

In Division One, Arataki who narrowly beat Rangiuru in the local round want their team to pull through this weekend away from home.

Arataki got past Kahukura 20-11 last week while Rangiuru accounted for Ngongotaha 58-14. The away side sits in third, two points adrift of Rangiuru who top the table.

Arataki coach Marty Bourke says the side is looking to put another good performance together this weekend against a quality Rangiuru side.

'We were lucky to come away with a victory over them in the first round but are expecting an even harder battle this time as results are showing us they want to stay at the top and have best for and against record in the competition.”

'Again our focus is on doing the basics well and preparing well during the week, if all this is done well then hopefully the result will be in our favour, but results are not that critical at this stage it's more the processes and the team playing well collectively.”

Rangiuru coach Hika Reid says Rangiuru has a lot of respect for their opponents.

'We will be wanting to win on Saturday and to do so the boys will need to muscle up and stick to their structures to achieve this.

'We lost to Arataki in the first round and have come a long way since that match. Despite having a number of injuries we will be hoping the team we put out on Saturday will pull through for the win.”

The Women's Division also sees Arataki as the match of the round, hosting Waikite – both unbeaten so far this competition.

Waikite have the upper hand going into the season with a golden point extra time win over Arataki at Waikite's annual pre-season tournament.

Arataki have lost a couple of their senior players, but this is balanced out by several exciting new players this year, which have settled into the team environment.

Waikite's Eliza Stephens says Arataki are the current Bayfair Baywide champions, so they are the underdogs and like to be in this position.

'There is no pressure on us, even though we won the 10-aside tournament just over a month ago, I don't believe that is an indication of the game we will be playing this weekend.

'We will be going into Sunday's game with an open mind. The girls are pumped and ready to go.”
