Magical finals opportunity

A gutsy weekend of high intensity netball looks to have galvanised the Kia Magic even more and they should head into this home ANZ Championship semifinal with plenty of confidence.

The side came from behind to win the New Zealand Conference Elimination Final in extra time against the Southern Steel before upsetting the Mystics by three goals to become the New Zealand Conference Champions.

Now they have the NSW Swifts in their sights for a spot in the Grand Final.

Swifts coach Rob Wright was an interested spectator in Auckland for the New Zealand Conference Final on Monday night and will head home knowing they will come up against a Magic side which pushes hard to the final whistles.

But Hamilton will hold no fear for the Swifts who have already travelled there this season when they beat the Magic in Round Two by five goals.

It will however be their fourth straight week on the road and maybe one plane flight too far in their quest to add to the inaugural title they won in 2008.

The match-up between Magic shooter Jo Harten and Swifts defender Sharni Layton will be pivotal for the outcome.

Harten has been the stand-out in the Magic's shooting circle but comes up against the competition leader in both deflections and intercepts in Layton – a contest which will be worthy of the admission ticket alone.

Kia Magic coach Julie Fitzgerald says coming off the back off two inspiring victories, there is plenty of belief in her side in 2015.

'I am absolutely stoked and I think that Monday night's victory was one of bravest wins I've ever been associated with and I could not be prouder of them,” says Fitzgerald.

'We had everything in place that we thought we could, so that they could get through the game"

'We had a pact that we weren't going to talk about the tiredness, we knew we had an opportunity to win the NZ Conference and we were lucky to be here and not sitting at home watching it, so we wanted to make the most of the opportunity.”

Their 57-54 victory at Trusts Arena means they will host the second-placed Australian side - the NSW Swifts - in Hamilton on Sunday with the Mystics having to travel to Brisbane to face top Aussie team the Queensland Firebirds on Sunday.

And Fitzgerald will be drawing on all her finals experience – including winning the inaugural title in 2008 – to guide her young charges to victory against the talent-laden NSW Swifts outfit.

'Having a home semi is obviously an advantage, we didn't want to travel again and there's no doubt in the world that we will need to do a lot of recovery this week.

'We talked only last week that we really have been through quite a bit this year and to be able to reach the stage where we can play Finals at home we are pretty proud of.”

Key players across the court will be Swifts goal keeper Sharni Layton who leads the ANZ Championship in both intercepts, 41, and deflections, 89, and Magic wing attack Grace Rasmussen with the most goal assists, 222, in the league.

The Swifts have played in one Championship Grand Final, 2008, while the Magic have reached the Final on three occasions, 2008, 2010, 2012.

The Magic host the NSW Swifts at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton on Sunday from 7.10pm in the second ANZ Championship semifinal.
