Playoff race in secondary rugby

Having reached the half way point of the Bethlehem Coachlines Baywide Competition the race is on for the top four qualifying spots, and it is coming down to the wire across all divisions.

In Division One of the 1st XV competition added pressure is mounting on the holders of the Te Kani Shield with Western Heights High School, unbeaten after 15 games, going down to Opotiki College 24-17 losing the shield after one week.

The competition is so tight that Western Heights High School fell from first spot to fourth, with Otumoetai College and Te Whare Kura o Mauao making up the top four.

This week Opotiki College take the Te Kani Shield on the road to Whakatane High School who after a good win against Aquinas College will be a tough team to beat on their home ground.

Both teams are stacked with Bay of Plenty age grade trialists which will only add to the rugby bonanza as both teams battle for the most sought after trophy in the Bethlehem Coachlines Baywide Secondary Schools Competition.

In Division Two Taupo Nui a Tia head the table followed by Mount Maunganui College, Te Puke High School and Tauranga Boys College 3rd XV.

The top spot will be decided after the school holiday break when Mount Maunganui College travel to Taupo in the match of the round.

Te Puke High School, after a good start has faltered due to player injury and absences and will need to regain its early form to remain a top four contender.

Division Three remains an even tighter contest with five teams competing for the top four.

Papamoa College remain the unbeaten team in the division and under Nick Leask will remain the favourite to take out the title in August.
