More traffic lights for Cameron Rd

Funding for two Cameron Road roundabouts to be replaced with traffic lights has been approved as part of the recent Long Term Plan approvals.

The ‘two worst intersections' are at Ninth Ave/Cameron Road and Chadwick Road/Cameron Road.

The Chadwick Road roundabout will be replaced with traffic lights.

They are both suffering from a combination of small roundabouts and large traffic flows, says Tauranga City Council transportation manager Martin Parkes.

'It's just simply because of the volume of traffic that's trying to move round it,” says Martin. 'What happens is one or two arms of the roundabout tend to dominate the flow onto the roundabout. That then creates problems for the other arms. People take chances trying to get onto the circulating area and that's when crashes occur.”

Replacing the Ninth Ave roundabout has been on the cards for years, says Martin.

He says it's always been a problem intersection, it's always had a relatively high crash record with a number of personal injuries.

'It's always been an intersection that we have kept a close eye on, and it's been in previous ten year plans to do some work on. It's just got to that point now where we feel it's an opportune time to put things right and make it safer for everybody.

'Not just cars drivers, but pedestrians, cyclists, mobility scooter users, it's just basically the time has come to do some work on it.”

The work on both intersections is expected to take place in the 2016/17 financial year.

'This year we're working on the design, getting it safety audited and getting it finalised. We will be putting it out to tender early next financial year,” says Martin.

'We still have quite a bit of work to do on it. We haven't even got a base design yet. We are just starting that at the moment.”

It means Cameron Road will have two more sets of traffic lights and seven sets of lights on the intersections between Ninth Avenue and Gate Pa.

'It's not an issue for us,” says Martin. 'We monitor the performance of Cameron Road every day through our traffic control centre. There are cameras at every single intersection. We know how Cameron road is performing and currently it's performing how we want.

'We know that at certain times of the day, the evening peak, there are some issues but it's for such a short period of time it's currently not a major concern for us.

'The message to the public is if they want to travel the whole length of Cameron Road they will get held up from time to time. If they don't want to be held up there is a lovely road called Route K that they can use.”

Traffic lights

Ah well the people of greerton said no traffic lights and council didn't listen. Obviously nobody from the council drives in these areas at peak times as they would see that for sensible motorists the roundabouts work perfectly well. Two more sets of traffic lights down Cameron road will simply create long lines of frustrated motorists who will run red lights. Why do the council never listen to the people that know best.

route k

yes lights again it does help control traffic flows and it also holds up traffic and then backs up . I travel daily through Cameron rd. my biggest pain is getting onto route k which they need to address from Cameron rd you should be able to have a flyeover from !5 ave to go south. Not have to take the roundabout at the industrial area Judea then drive to elizabeth turn around so you can go south back to route k.

Why

Do the council continue to go against the wishes of the public? I have lived 100 meters from this roundabout for many years, yes it gets backed up at peak times, but cant imagine how bad it would get with lights instead. The biggest problem is the pedestrian crossing, people cross the Cameron road one at a constant trickle, holding up traffic, put the lights on the crossing!

Traffic lights? Really

As reported in another newspaper: "About 27,000 vehicles pass through the intersection each day. Of the 15 crashes at the roundabout, three resulted in injury, with all three victims considered to be vulnerable road users - a moped operator, a cyclist and a pedestrian." and now the next day "He says it's always been a problem intersection, it's always had a relatively high crash record with a number of personal injuries." works out to 1 crash every 122 day, not to bad I would have thought

How about better access to Route K? Peak hour traffic on Cameron road might disappear if access to Route K was better than a single access point at Elizabeth St.

Still problematic

Yes, the Cameron Road/Chadwick intersection definitely has problems. However they are made worse by the pedestrian crossing midway between Chadwick Road and the roundabout by the Caltex/RSA intersection. The whole area needs to be addressed as one entity to find a workable solution.

Perhaps put an underpass where the pedestrian crossing is by Caltex.

As usual the comments all come from drivers. Roundabouts are a death trap for pedestrians and users of wheelchairs, pushchairs, mobility scooters. Have you ever tried to cross Cameron Road between 5th and 11th Avenues? Every time you take your life in your hands- with The Warehouse on one side, Pack & Save opposite, people are continually crossing with shopping to catch buses. All risk life & limb to cross. No, the car does not rule and Tauranga is supposed to be an Age Friendly City! The cars come at speed and from no where from the 9th Avenue roundabout it is truly scary!

Try using these if its so dangerous.

Nonsense

May as well put lights in because most Kiwi drivers stop at roundabouts for no apparent reason. I wonder what they are waiting for sometimes. It's not a junction. It's called a roundabout for goodness sake. Keep moving if nothing is coming. Jeez.

No to lights

I thought that this council was elected on the promise to reduce debt. I don't call taking out a couple of round abouts and replacing them with lights saving money. The Mayor and the councillors need to reign in their staff.I would hate to think what this fiasco is going to cost. This council is also as arrogant as the prime minister and his gang, neither listen to the people that vote them in.

Pardon ...

dstewart writes: As usual the comments all come from drivers. Roundabouts are a death trap for pedestrians and users of wheelchairs, pushchairs, mobility scooters.' ... Maybe, some, somewhere, but NOT this roundabout! Over 5 years the roundabout has handled over 45 million traffic movements with three accidents involving injury - NO deaths! Where on earth do comments written as facts come from?
