Knife allegedly used in Mount robbery

A large police presence has been reported in downtown Mount Maunganui this afternoon following what is believed to be an armed robbery at The Souvenir Shop.

The store, on Maunganui Road, is opposite Westpac and directly next door to the Downtown Pharmacy.

Police at the scene of the robbery.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says she was three shops down when the incident happened.

She says someone has allegedly gone into the shop and tried to steal something.

'The shop attendant went to intervene and has had a knife pulled on her,” she explained.

'I think he had a get-away car parked nearby but the police were on the scene very quickly.”

Police are at the scene and are investigating the incident.

We'll bring you more information as it becomes available.

Must have been desperate for a possum hat to keep out the chilly southerly. Frightening for the shop assistant though and personally I would string them up.
