Some Bay of Plenty farmers are frantically trying to pump excess water off their land as fear sets in that grass will start to rot.
Bay of Plenty Federated Farmers president John Scrimgeour says between five and 10 per cent of the region's farmers have low lying land underwater after the weekend's torrential rain.
'Flood pumps have been actively working to get this water out,” says John.
'If water lies around in this hot weather, the grass starts to rot.”
John says it is important the water is removed within two days and most farmers he has spoken to are confident they can do it in that time.
He says most farmers coped well with the heavy rain and fears of drought have now been 'laid to rest”.
'The rain was probably a bit over the top. Some farmers had to get stock off low lying river flats.
'Summer is starting to advance now, but this rain has greatly reduced any change of drought.”
