She's full of laughs and profanity, loves to sing and next month Anika Moa will return to the Coromandel to put a smile on people's faces and a song in their hearts.
The loveable Kiwi singer/songwriter is heading to the Coromandel as part of her Queen at the Table national tour and will perform at Eggsentric Cafe & Restaurant in Cooks Beach on October 2.
Anika Moa with Jol Mulholland and special guest Sean Donnelly will be performing at Eggsentric Café & Restaurant on Friday, October 2
This will be her fourth show at Eggsentric and this time around she'll be joined by regular collaborator and bandmate Jol Mulholland, plus special musical guest and friend Sean Donnelly.
'It's an awesome place, I've had awesome gigs there in the past and in fact, all my shows in the past have sold out, that's how good the audiences are! Hopefully it'll be the same this time around.”
The tour kicks off this Friday and Anika will be on the road for about a month, during which she'll play 14 shows travel as far north as Whangarei, and as far south as Dunedin.
It'll be her first solo tour for some time now and when asked if she's eager to hit the road she replies: 'I am indeed,” enunciating each word.
'At the moment I'm a part-time mother, part-time worker and when I go on tour I meet people, get inspired every night by meeting different crowds. I love singing to people.
'I've got it good, I'm quite free to do what I want, tell the jokes I want, and have an audience that's good at communicating what they want
'They're in control just as much as I'm in control, and if we have a mutual respect for each other it's a real good gig.”
This tour is in celebration of her latest album Queen at the Table which has seen the songstress move into the realm of electronic music.
It was recorded at The Oven, part of Mt Eden recording studio The Lab, and was co-written, produced and performed on by bandmate Jol Mulholland.
'Jol played the keys, bass, guitar, harmonies, did all the drum beats, he's amazing and I pay him hardly anything which is excellent too,” she says before cracking up into laughter.
'There is a whole lot of musical chemistry between us and I just think he's the bee's knees. A lot of people admire him for his work ethic and for his – he's just a dominator man, he's awesome.”
Changing sounds can be hugely frightening for musicians, but Anika also feels empowered by the move and says some people 'might not have got it, but others did”.
She is also reminded that some of her favourite songwriters have gone through this process before, and while the production of their music changed their songwriting stayed the same.
'I think my songwriting has stayed the same too, the production has just moved forward – you have to be moving forward otherwise you're moving backwards. You don't want to create shit.
'Queen at the Table was really easy and fun to make, even though I was going through quite a bad time in my personal life, it was quite cathartic,” she reflects.
'Everything you do you want to strive to become better and better and it's my best album thus far.”

For this tour she's making the journey with her good friend Sean Donnelly, who is perhaps better known by his stage name SJD – who's embarking on his first ever national solo tour.
Anika says the pair have been trying to write with each other for a long time, so asking him to head out on tour with her seemed like the natural thing to do.
'I've always loved his music, I've grown up with it since I was 18 and I think he's a fantastic song writer, I really admire him.
'This is his first national tour he's ever done in his whole entire career, yeah, this is quite a big deal for him. For me it's not so much,” she says and cracks up into laughter yet again.
If you are a fan of Anika and love Kiwi music, then you definitely don't want to miss this show on October 2.
A handful of songs from Queen at the Table she's looking forward to performing live include ‘Jealous', ‘These Lonely Tears' and ‘Fly' which she describes as a 'trance dancey McNumber”.
Anika will also be offering up some of her favourite covers, but you'll have to head along to find out what they are – they're a tightly guarded secret.
'There's lots of humour in my shows, but there's lots of depth and emotion as well. This is that ‘one thing' that I love to do in my life and I want to share it with people.
'So if you're a newbie, arrive with an open heart and no expectations, and be prepared to be sworn at!”
