Mount Maunganui wins Williams Cup

Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui defeated Tauranga Boys College in the final of the 2011 Williams Cup, played at the BOP Cricket Oval at Mount Maunganui on January 30.

The title match-up saw the two top qualifiers from nine rounds of round robin play, square off with the most prestigious piece of Baywide club cricket silverware on the line.

Mount Maunganui was playing in their fifth successive Williams Cup final, with Tauranga Boys endeavouring to repeat their 2009 Williams Cup triumph.

Batting first Mount Maunganui posted 232/8 in their allotted overs. After losing two cheap top order wickets, former skipper Blair Parlane knuckled down to top score with a gritty 59 runs.

The Tauranga Boys bowlers then removed the Mount middle order, before Matt Golding batting at nine batted with authority to post an unbeaten 38. Morgan Bidois grabbed three wickets for Tauranga Boys, with Cameron Neal and Mark Orchard taking two wickets apiece.

Tauranga Boys were well in the match, being on comparable terms at both the first and second drinks break. However as the run rate climbed the Mount bowlers started to take charge, and were rewarded when Tauranga Boys were dismissed for 196.

Joe Carter batted well to be rewarded with his team's top score of 44, with Mark Orchard posting 36 runs. Mount captain Daniel Hill returned bowling figures of 2/22, with Ross Chadwick also taking two wickets.

The Mount victory was the fourth time that they had lifted aloft the Williams Cup in triumph. Long time Mount Maunganui club stalwart Blair Parlane, along with Nick Smith, Daniel Hill and Dale Swan were also members of the 2008 Williams Cup winning team.
