Police are aiming speed guns and radar on traffic outside schools for the next two weeks.
Several drivers received tickets for speeding through the 40km/h zone outside the Welcome Bay School on Tuesday, says traffic Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.
Sergeant Lester Polglase takes aim.
'There will be a significant number of kids still in holiday mode,” says Ian.
'They are often excited, catching up with old friends again, there's also the issue around new entrants being unfamiliar with their surroundings – and we need to be very mindful of the fact that kids are very easily distracted and unpredictable. That makes them quite vulnerable.”
He's challenging drivers to drop below the posted speed limits outside schools in the first two weeks during the high traffic times from 7.30am to 9am and from 2.30pm until 4pm.
Police are also reminding drivers to comply with the illuminated 40 km/h speed limit signs outside some schools, and make sure they comply with the 40 km/h school zone speed limit when those signs are illuminated.
'It's just so that we reduce that risk, or the potential for risk, the potential for harm, and make sure that kids don't get injured or lose their lives needlessly doing something as ordinary as going to school.”

Mr Campion fresh from his tour of duty to Outer Mongolia or wherever it was has on his return jumped straight onto the school speed zone bandwagon.Let me repeat that no evidence has been produced showing that any significant injury has been caused to a school pupil in the Tauranga area by an offending speeding driver over the last 10years.Rather than thinly disguised revenue collecting and grand standing what about educating children and their parents on road safety issues & procedures
