Cheeky Western Bay wizards magic up a win

Those cheeky wizards from Western Bay of Plenty District Council took out the top spot in last week's Fulton Hogan Corporate Challenge, part of Tauranga City Council's Live to Play month.

The winners of the Fulton Hogan Corporate Challenge were the WBOP District Council ‘wizards'.

It was a close match and all 10 teams fought valiantly at games that ranged from noodle hockey to doughnut eating.
Live to Play month continues this Saturday, October 10, with a free family fun day at Baywave from 11am to 3pm. Outdoor activities include kite flying at Fergusson Park from 1pm. The mobile library bus will be stationed at Kulim Park from 1.30 - 3pm for Books in the Park. For more events see Tauranga City Council's website or pick up a free calendar from your local library.

Open for Live to Play
Live to Play also presents two special opportunities this week to visit the Otumoetai Pa site with an open day on Sunday October 11 and again on Wednesday October 14. Both open days run from 11am - 1pm.
'The open days at the Otumoetai Pa Historic Reserve will provide an incredibly rare opportunity for people to venture into the reserve and experience the history of Otumoetai Pa for themselves,” says Maori Cultural Heritage manager for Tauranga City Council Dean Flavell.
'We'll also have a team of experts – including colleagues from the NZHPT – who will help bring the history of this important heritage landscape alive as part of this tremendous partnership initiative.”
Once a heavily fortified settlement, Otumoetai Pa came under fierce attack throughout the 1820s and 1830s by northern tribes armed with muskets. But its strong defenses held and it was never taken.
It was also the site where local rangatira rejected the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.
Prior to the establishment of Tauranga, Otumoetai Pa was once known as the capital of the district and continued to play a significant role in the history of the area.
